Case Study - Publishing House
The publishing company I will be researching is EMAP Metro.
In late 1980s, Emap accelerated its magazine launch programme and established a near domination of monthly music magazines through launches, Q (1986) and Mojo (1993). Select and Mixmag were sold to Development Hell in November 2005. However, Select closed in November 2000 with sales falling to 50,534: blamed on indie market being absorbed into mainstream.
Which magazine titles does the company publish?
EMAP Metro owns a number of lifestyle and music group based magazines in London. These magazine titles include Empire, FHM, Mixmag, Mojo, Q, Select, Sky and Smash hits.
What types of audiences are targeted by these magazines?
Each of these magazines is targeted at different audiences.
· Empire magazine reviews mainstream films and art films as well as film news, previews and reviews. The magazine aims to target a wide audience with different interests and tastes in film.
· FHM publishes yearly rankings for the sexiest women alive based on public voting through the magazine's website. Therefore, FHM target males who are 18-35 years old.
· Mixmag magazine is about dance music and clubbing so the target audience mostly appeals to clubbers and dance music lovers.
· Mojo is a classic rock magazine that targets a very specific and niche audience which are rock lovers.
· I feel that Q magazine target an audience of 16+ due to the variety of music they cover.
· Select magazine is known for covering Britpop so should appeal to anyone interested in the British music scene.
· Sky magazine ceased publication in 2001. It was an entertainment magazine dealing mainly in celebrities featured in film, TV and music, so their target audience is mostly relevant to people 16+ who tend to watch a lot of movies and TV.
· Smash hits magazine was a pop music based magazine, aimed at teenagers and young adults.
Why would it target different audiences with each magazine that it makes?
Each magazine target different audiences because not all people have the same interest in music. You may have some magazines that try to put as many genres of music into one magazine like NME, where a lot of different artists from different genres of music are represented in it. This can widen their audience which raises profits and makes the publishing company better known to other retailers.
In addition, it targets a different audience with each magazine so that it does not produce the same type of magazine in the market. For example, ‘FHM ‘is the only magazine that focuses on women and mainly attracts males, and ‘Mixmag’ is a music magazine that only focuses on dance music and clubbing.
